ESCORIAL



The Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial, one of the most important Modern Age , was built by Philip II. It is said that one of the wars that the king had with France, particularly during the Battle of San Quentin, destroyed a small church dedicated to San Lorenzo and that's why the king decided to dedicate the monastery to the saint.

At first, Philip II thought of El Escorial as a place of burial of his father, Charles I. Therefore it was necessary to have a large church or basilica where religious services by the emperor and a monastery where he lived the religious community appointed lawyer.
